AgCdO Contact Material for Specified Legacy Designs
AgCdO is a silver cadmium oxide contact material historically specified in relays, switches and contactors for arc handling and resistance to contact welding. Different AgCdO grades and manufacturing routes do not behave identically, so an existing material callout should be checked together with the original drawing, switching duty, contact force and electrical-life requirement.
AgCdO contact faces may be produced as buttons or joined to copper and copper-alloy bases in bimetal and tri-metal contact rivets. The contact face is only one part of the current path. Head thickness, rivet-base conductivity, bonding quality, surface finish and assembly deformation can all influence resistance, temperature and service life.
Compliance and Replacement Decisions
Cadmium is regulated in many markets and product categories. AgCdO should therefore be used only when the customer specification and all applicable destination-market requirements permit it. A transition to AgSnO2 or another cadmium-free system is not automatically a drop-in substitution: material transfer, temperature, contact force, geometry and arc behavior can change, so representative device validation is required before a production drawing is revised.
AgCdO RFQ and Validation Data
| Design input | Information to provide |
|---|---|
| Existing specification | Material designation, oxide content if known, part revision, supplier history and approved deviations |
| Switching duty | Voltage, make and break current, AC or DC, load type, frequency and expected electrical life |
| Contact system | Force, gap, bounce, contact geometry, carrier material, riveting method and thermal limits |
| Compliance scope | Destination markets, customer substance requirements, exemptions or approvals confirmed by the responsible compliance team |
| Replacement validation | Resistance, temperature rise, welding, erosion, transfer, dimensional stability and end-of-life criteria |
Send the legacy drawing, target markets and test specification with the RFQ. This gives engineering and compliance teams enough context to determine whether AgCdO remains appropriate or whether a separately validated alternative should be considered.
