Application engineering
Match the Contact System to the Switching Application
Electrical contacts are selected according to the actual circuit and mechanism in which they operate. A small signal relay, an appliance rocker switch and an industrial contactor can place very different demands on the same nominal silver alloy. Current type, inrush, inductance, contact force, opening speed, bounce, arc duration, thermal path and required electrical life should be reviewed together.
The final component may be a contact rivet, a contact button, a welded contact tip or a stamped carrier assembly. AgNi and AgSnO2 are common material families in low-voltage switching equipment, while other silver alloys or refractory-metal systems may be evaluated for different duties. The device owner should approve the material and geometry through representative testing rather than treating an alloy name as a universal application rule.
Application-to-Contact Review
Start with the load profile and failure mode, then define the contact motion and available installation space. Use those inputs to compare material behavior, contact-face geometry, rivet or button structure and joining method. Samples should be checked in the intended carrier and device because assembly deformation and contact force can change the result.
Application Data to Confirm
| Review area | Information to confirm |
|---|---|
| Relays | Coil and contact arrangement, rated and inrush current, load type, contact force, bounce and electrical-life target |
| Micro switches | Actuation travel, snap action, contact gap, carrier spring behavior, current and switching frequency |
| Push buttons and rocker switches | Manual operating profile, resistive or lamp load, contact geometry, enclosure environment and cycle target |
| Contactors and circuit breakers | Making and breaking duty, prospective current, arc-control system, temperature limits and inspection criteria |
| Automotive switching | DC voltage, inrush or motor load, vibration, temperature range, environmental sealing and customer validation plan |
Provide the device type, voltage, current waveform, load category, mechanical contact data and target life with the part drawing. This creates a defensible starting point for material selection and prototype evaluation.
